The Spanish Conditional tense.
Minutes
In this short grammar lesson we’ll show you how to conjugate and form phrases and questions with the Condicional, the Spanish Conditional tense.
Here’s what we’re going to cover:
Here’s how to conjugate the three main Spanish verb groups in the conditional tense:
Person | Hablar – Speak | Vivir – Live | Comer – Eat |
---|---|---|---|
yo | hablaría | viviría | comería |
tú | hablarías | vivirías | comerías |
él / ella | hablaría | viviría | comería |
nosotros | hablaríamos | viviríamos | comeríamos |
vosotros | hablaríais | viviríais | comeríais |
ellos | hablarían | vivirían | comerían |
Notice how the verb endings are added to the WHOLE infinitive, and are the SAME for all three verb groups?
Don’t forget the accent on the letter I.
The Spanish conditional tense corresponds to the English conditional tense (WOULD + VERB).
Here’s what the questions look like:
Without doubt, one of the verbs which is most utilised in the conditional tense is ‘gustar’. We’ll use it for a lot of common expressions and also questions, particularly when we want to propose something.

The verbs which are irregular in the conditional are often only a little bit irregular. The endings are the same as the regular verbs, but the stem does no use the infinitive.

DECIR | DIR | Diría, dirías… |
HACER | HAR | Haría, harías… |
SALIR | SALDR | Saldría, saldrías… |
TENER | TENDR | Tendría, tendrías… |
VALER | VALDR | Valdría, valdrías… |
PONER | PONDR | Pondría, pondrías… |
PODER | PODR | Podría, podrías… |
VENIR | VENDR | Vendría, vendrías… |
CABER | CABR | Cabría, cabrías… |
HABER | HABR | Habría, habrías… |
SABER | SABR | Sabría, sabrías… |
This same group of verbs is also irregular in the futuro simple, another tense which uses the infinitive as the stem for conjugations.
