Communicate successfully with the shop assistant

Planning a shopping trip to Barcelona or Madrid? Popping over the border to go shopping in Mexico?

In this class we’ll listen to a native Spanish shop assistant deal with a client. These conversations feature two native speakers talking at their natural speed and using everyday language, so you may not understand everything! You’ll hear a native Madrid accent (the shop assistant) and a native Catalan accent (the shopper).

The texts of the conversations are included at the bottom of the page. However, please try not to look until you’ve listened to each dialogue at least twice!

The author is part-owner of a jewellery/jewelry store in Cadaqués, Spain, so he knows a thing or two about the Spanish phrases most frequently used by shoppers and shop assistants.

We don’t go over any Spanish grammar or vocabulary in this series of conversation audios. If you’d like explanations of the phrases used in these dialogues, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait to December 2024 when we publish our new classes on Spanish phrases for shopping.

How did you get on with those conversations? Both women were speaking at, more or less, natural speed, and the language used was exactly what you would hear if you were out shopping in Barcelona or Madrid.

Now, we’re not going to give you the English translations of these dialogues as we want you to get used to thinking exclusively in Spanish.

In all these conversations, #1 is the shopper/client (cliente/a) and #2 is the shop assistant (dependienta).

Shopping Conversation 1

1- ¡Buenos días! ¿Está abierta la tienda?
2- ¡Buenos días! ¡Sí claro, pase!
1- Gracias. Me gustaría saber el precio de esta falda.
2- Este modelo cuesta 65€.
1- ¿Podría probármelo?
2- Si, tiene los probadores de mujeres al fondo a la derecha.
1- ¡Perfecto, gracias!

Shopping Conversation 2

1- ¡Hola! ¡Qué zapatos más bonitos…!
2- Sí, están hechos en Italia. Son de muy buena calidad.
1- ¿Podría mirarme si tiene la talla 38?
2- Oh, justo esa talla se me ha agotado.
1- ¡Qué lástima! Gracias igualmente.

Shopping Conversation 3

1- ¿Disculpe, tiene una talla M de esta camisa?
2- Sí, ahora se la traigo.
1- No estoy segura si me queda algo grande.
2- Es que esta marca talla un poco grande.
1- ¡Pues quizás mejor la S, gracias!

Shopping Conversation 4

1- ¡Hola! Vengo a hacer una devolución.
2- ¿De qué se trata?
1- Ayer compré estos pantalones y no me acaba de gustar como me quedan.
2- No hay ningún problema. ¿Prefiere mirar otro modelo o que le retornemos el dinero?
1- Me miraré otro modelo, muchas gracias.

Shopping Conversation 5

1- ¡Buenos días! Tengo que hacer un regalo a mi mujer, pero voy un poco perdido.
2- ¡Buenos días! ¿Tiene alguna idea?
1- Pues la verdad es que no…
2- Si quiere podemos hacer un Vale Regalo, así ella puede venir a escoger lo que más le
guste.
1- Muy buena idea, pues haré esto.

Shopping Conversation 6

1- Querría saber cuánto cuesta esta camisa verde.
2- ¿Ésta de aquí?
1- No, la de al lado.
2- Ah, esta cuesta 25€, está con un 20% de descuento.
1- ¡Me la probaré, gracias!
